Fortune 108 is a site-specific, public participatory, AI-driven installation at Qingdao Aishan Industrial Park, one of China’s tens of thousands large-scale manufacturing sites, where thousands of migrant workers engage in industrial production.

A trained dataset derived from a curated corpus of historical and vernacular Gods of Fortune enables the machine learning system to interact with workers on site, selecting 108 contemporary “Gods of Fortune.”

Their portraits are then AI-generated through a God of Fortune model and juxtaposed with existing folk deities, while their generated personal legends are presented alongside traditional lore.

The system operates continuously, producing judgment without finality. Over repeated encounters, participants begin to adjust their posture, timing, and positioning in response to its decisions. Informal strategies circulate, shaping a collective response to opaque assessment.
